Review
Honestly, this book is brilliant. It’s a YA novel that I want to give to every YA I know/meet/walk past on the street.
In school kids can be really mean, judgemental and cruel. This book teaches you something that my Mum always told me: always be kind as you just don’t know what somebody is going through. I thought about this a lot while reading this book. I thought about the girl I spoke to at school who was suicidal, with self harm scars all up her legs. I thought about the girl who was often late to class as her Mum was calling her telling her she was suicidal. I thought about the boy who smelled just about every day. And the other who only told me much later that he was abused by a neighbour growing up.
I thought about how lucky I was to never have to wonder where I would sleep that night, how I would eat, or when I would get the chance to have a shower.
The other thing I really liked about this book is it encourages you to think about ‘why’. Yes that boy stole a banana, but why did he steal the banana? Yes she can’t get out of bed today but why can’t she get out of bed today? Less blame, more empathy and understanding.
Maybe it’s just me but I loved this book and really would recommend it. So much so I text my friend immediately after finishing it (yes at 2.30am… sorry Becca!!) This book is up there with my favourite reads of 2018!
